Teenage sensation Zhang Zhanshuo made Asian Games history in the pool, becoming the first swimmer to win seven gold medals at a single Games. The 19-year-old counted out his titles on his fingers after cruising to the 400m freestyle crown in a Games record 3:41.28.
Zhang's haul, the 200m, 400m and 1500m freestyle titles plus three relay golds, eclipsed the six-gold hauls of Zhang Yufei and Rikako Ikee. Only North Korean shooter So Gin-man, with seven golds and a silver in 1982, has a better single-Games total.
His triumph powered China to 30 of the 41 swimming golds. Afterwards he said the Asian Games is not the goal, and he is still aiming for the Olympics and competing with the best. A successor to Sun Yang may have arrived.
