The Whistle That Stole Real Madrid's Winner: Shaw Rescues City in UWCL Thriller

Khadija Shaw's 51st-minute finish cancelled out Linda Caicedo's opener in a 1-1 Women's Champions League draw — but the night belonged to the 89th minute, when referee Silvia Gasperotti's whistle wiped out Silvia Cristobal's would-be winner after the official inadvertently blocked Beth Mead. Madrid were furious; City escaped with a point.

Thursday night at the Joie Stadium was Manchester City's first senior outing since the Premier League's guilty verdict on the men's side detonated across the club. Andrée Jeglertz's side responded the best way a football team can: by refusing to flinch. Real Madrid landed the first blow through Linda Caicedo in the 29th minute, the Colombian dancing around the outside down the right before clipping a gorgeous finish inside the far post. City were second best for most of the first half — Mary Fowler's header against the bar from Alex Greenwood's free-kick was the sum of their threat.

The second half was a different story. Yui Hasegawa snapped into a challenge in midfield, the ball broke, and Khadija Shaw did what Khadija Shaw does: drove across the goalkeeper to make it 1-1 on 51 minutes. Shaw then headed over from a Lauren Hemp cross and Hasegawa volleyed wide from a Greenwood corner, while Ayaka Yamashita produced a fine stop to deny Irune Dorado. 'We tried the second half much better than we started the first half,' Shaw told Disney+ afterwards. 'Disappointed that we didn't win the game but definitely fight to the end and that's good.' Jeglertz, asked about the week's noise, was unruffled: 'Of course there is a lot of noise outside but the players are very calm. I haven't seen or noticed anything that will take any percentage out of the players' performance.'

Then came the 89th minute. Silvia Cristobal lashed a wonderful finish into the top corner for what looked a certain Real winner — and was met by a whistle that had already gone. Gasperotti had inadvertently blocked Beth Mead's run in the build-up and stopped play before the shot, correctly, per the laws; but Madrid's players and coach Pau Quesada were apoplectic and surrounded her at full time. Both sides now sit on two draws, just inside the top 12, after City also drew 1-1 at Bayern in their opener. Madrid won't be celebrating: they were three seconds and one whistle away from three points. City get Arsenal in the WSL next, live on Sky Sports; Madrid get Barcelona, who thrashed Roma and are the only team on six points.
