Chelsea came within inches of a famous win at OL Lyonnes on Wednesday night, only for VAR to snatch it away. Lauren James thought she'd struck a late winner at the Groupama Stadium, but after referee Marta Huerta de Aza pointed to the spot, a pitchside review overturned the penalty and the game finished 0-0.
It was no smash-and-grab. Chelsea defended superbly — a seventh clean sheet in eleven UEFA matches — and Hannah Hampton produced a stunning late save to deny Ada Hegerberg her 70th UWCL goal. Lucy Bronze, Player of the Match against her former club, led a back line that stood tall against the eight-time champions.
A point in Lyon is a result any side in Europe would take. But Chelsea will leave France wondering what might have been — and with the belief they can beat anyone in this competition.
